Pink Floyd was founded in 1967
and named after two blues singers, Pink Anderson and Floyd Patterson. Syd
Barrett was one of the founding members but left early on because of
troubles agreeing with the band. "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond", from the
1975 album Wish You Were Here is a tribute to him. After Barrett
left about 1970, Roger Waters took on the duties of main songwriter, a post
he held until 1983. Waters' tenure as singer/songwriter led to Pink Floyd's
most popular works, The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
Throughout the 1970's the
band scored four top ten albums, Dark Side (#1, 1979), Wish You
Were Here (#5, 1975), Animals (#7, 1977) and The Wall (#1
for nine weeks, 1979, spurned on with a laser show reenacting the entire
album). In 1975, David Gilmour discovered a 16 year old Kate Bush and
helped her get a contract with EMI. Under his guidance and insistence, she
did not release her first album until two years later, which he played on.
The band temporarily split up in 1983, with David Gilmour pursuing session
work and Roger Waters moving onto a moderately successful solo career. They
reunited for a tour in 1987 and recorded two more albums. Pink Floyd is
also one of the most bootlegged bands,
having spawned nearly 150 bootleg albums. The most popular and best known
of these is Dark Side of the Moo, which consists of outtakes from
their first two albums and the Dark Side sessions. This album has
been released in various guises worldwide but first appeared on the TMOQ
(Trade Mark of Quality) label in 1975.
